Access to Food
Working With Community Members to Create Opportunity and Access Now
We have been working with a wide range of community members and organizations to develop concrete strategies to get more healthy, affordable food on the tables of low and moderate income families in Ottawa now. In particular, we are grateful to our Women’s Community Economic Development group and members of several small ethno-cultural organizations, for helping us to put in place new opportunities along the spectrum of food supports.
NEW! The Social Planning Council of Ottawa is excited to launch several new initiatives that seek to address the fundamentally important issue of food security. This includes:
New food programs created in 2011 by SPC with community partners:
- 3 new monthly community kitchens with 30 households, in partnership with Debra Dynes Family House Inc. (a social housing community) and Coopération Intégration Canada (for Francophone newcomers)
- “Pick-Your-Own” outings with low- to moderate-income households
- “The Food Pantry”, a revolving loan fund for low and moderate income households to enable collaborative bulk buying of nutritious food
Research That Matters
- Participatory research with newcomer children and youth on strategies to increase access to nutritious food in their families
- Developing a culturally based Canada’s Food Guide for newcomers
We are also pleased to continue to offer organizational sponsorship and administrative host for:
- Just Food, Ottawa’s leading food security organization, working towards a vibrant, just and sustainable food system in the Ottawa region
- The Community Garden Network of Ottawa, supporting over 25 community gardens in Ottawa
- Savour Ottawa, promoting the local food economy for both locals and visitors to the area.
