The Social Planning Council of Ottawa is excited to announce a new phase of the Building Greener Futures Together initiative! Beginning February 2012, we’re launching a new, more comprehensive employment program for young adults looking to enter the “green” home renovation and retrofit industries.

The new employment program allows participants to:

  • Learn the basics of green renovations and employability skills through one month of training with a local employment centre, combined with Algonquin College and La Cite Collegiale
  • Receive four essential workplace certifications and safety equipment for working in home renovations and construction
  • Start a career with a paid work placement in the industry!

We are now Recruiting for February 2012!

We are looking for individuals aged 16-30 who are interested in starting a career in the home construction and renovations industries!

Our Mission

Building Greener Futures Together works to improve access to jobs in “green” residential renovations and retrofits for youth facing labour market barriers. In addition to providing essential employment supports, such as training opportunities and work placements, BGFT is actively developing the job market in order maximize opportunities for new workers.

BGFT is a multi stakeholder initiative led by the Social Planning Council of Ottawa, the City of Ottawa several local home renovators and not-for-profit organizations.

Our Objectives

  • Expand quality employment opportunities in the local green renovation sector, particularly for people facing barriers in the labour market;
  • Increase economic activity in Ottawa’s green renovation sector;
  • Provide a range of supports to increase the adoption and implementation of green building technologies and practices in Ottawa;
  • Strengthen the economic vitality of the locally based sector through strategic sector support, public policy development and consumer education;
  • Increase the sustainability of Ottawa’s housing stock.

 In addition to essential employment supports, the BGFT initiative:

  •  produces compelling consumer education material on the benefits of green home renovations
  • addresses key public policy issues and opportunities,
  • hosts a monthly workshop series that expands the "green" knowledge base within local industry.
