RIVERGLEN FARM

Riverglen Farm has two rooms in the farmhouse to rent out, and land to share.

This 100 year old, four bedroom brick house is situated on 112 acres of farmland, surrounded by forest, right in the City of Ottawa. There is a bus service at the end of the 1-km driveway on Carling Ave, but a vehicle might be handy for the winter.

Interested parties could tend a garden, setup a workshop or studio, or raise animals or just simply enjoy living by the Ottawa River in the Greenbelt. Of course, all farming activities must be carried in a biodynamic manner, as set out by Demeter Canada. Interested persons could also rent use of the land and not live in the farmhouse.

Rivergle is operated by a young farmer, and is especially interested in associating with other new farmers or growers who are trying to get a foothold in the agricultural business. There are opportunities for developing cooperative relationships, and he is open to suggestions.

Contact David as soon as possible if you would like to chat about any of this.

MARIPOSA FARM

Mariposa Farm was established in 1980, having graduated from Agricultural school, I purchased the abandoned 107 acre farm. From there built all the buildings, barn, workshop, house and pavilion (restaurant and sleeping quarters for guests). The farm has several km of trails that are used to access the forest firewood and timber.  In the year 2000 we purchased 70 acres beside to expand the farm.

We grow ducks, geese, cows, pigs, maple syrup, firewood and 2 acres of gardens. Our market is the restaurant market in Ottawa.  There are no tractors as they were sold 5 years ago now all the work is done with 2 horses.  We do get some custom work done by a local farmer (hay).

I am the sole full-time person on the farm. We have had a lot of Wwoofers over the course of the years. Looking for one 3 day per week stipend gardener intern (Thursday, Friday and Saturday), from May to November. Three meals per day and lodging provided. Living here 7 days per week can be discussed. Work hours are from 8am to 6 pm daily. Teaching will be on-going; however, learning will be done from doing.

Mariposa also has a cabin and 10 acres of land to go with it. The very organic land has its own access to the highway. The cabin is on a south facing hill with solar power. The cost to rent the cabin and 20 acres is $100.00 per month and can be rented seasonally.
