It uniquely focuses on each community’s specific needs, compiled from a detailed assessment of seniors across 28 ethnic backgrounds. Our aim is to simplify your access to vital resources in your native language, enhancing your life in Ottawa’s vibrant, diverse landscape.

Services

OC Transpo:

Transportation & Accompaniment Services: Seniors on Site is an Ottawa-based company that provides dependable and secure transportation services, along with safe accompaniment and companion care, to empower seniors in maintaining their independence when driving becomes impractical. Their senior transportation services offer a convenient and trustworthy option, ensuring the safety and well-being of seniors with a dedicated driver. Seniors on Site provide transportation to/for:
  • Medical appointments
  • Grocery & personal shopping
  •  Hairdresser/barber appointment
  •  Prescription drop-off & pick-u
  • Religious services, concerts, plays, lectures

Retirement Homes
  • Private apartments, meals, and cleaning services are offered, with costs varying; it’s advisable to tour facilities first.

Subsidized Housing Co-op Housing
  • Co-op housing involves paying fees and sharing maintenance responsibilities.
  • Interested individuals must apply to each co-op separately; information can be found at Co-op Housing Ottawa.
Supportive Housing
  • Supportive housing provides extra care, medical assistance, meals, cleaning, and access to nursing care.
  • Coordinated through the Community Care Access Centre, inquiries can be made by calling 613-760-1700: Community Care Access Centre – Champlain.
Aging in Place
  •  Seniors can choose to stay in their homes with help for chores through Home Care services provided by the Local Health Integration Network (LHIN).

OPL Tech Help for Seniors A & O Support Services for Older Adults
Active Living Club 50+ (City of Ottawa)
  • Contact: 613-580-2400
  • Activities include cycling and hiking in spring, summer, and fall, as well as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. Leaders guide participants to various locations in Ottawa and Gatineau to enjoy trails, pathways, and landscapes.
Ottawa Public Health
  • Provides telephone counseling, information, and services to support those caring for older adults.

  • For general health-related items and services, seniors can call 3-1-1.

Meal Programs for Older Adults:

Handy Helpers by the Good Companions

Services are available for individuals aged 55 and above, as well as adults with physical disabilities residing north of the Queensway between Preston Street and Blair Road. If you reside outside of this specified area, please refer to this page to identify an agency that can provide assistance. Membership with The Good Companions is not required to access this service. The Handy Helper volunteers from The Good Companions are ready to assist with various tasks and odd jobs, including but not limited to:

  • Changing batteries in smoke detectors and replacing light bulbs.
  • Tightening doorknobs, locks, and adjusting or installing hinges.
  • Putting up shelves and pictures at a reasonable and safe height.
  • Assembling flat-pack furniture at a reasonable and safe height.
  • Undertaking small gardening jobs on a one-off basis, excluding tree pruning.
  • Taking down and putting up curtains and curtain rods (limited to a safe ceiling height).
  • Replacing tap washers and repairing dripping taps.
  • Offering basic computer and technology assistance, such as cell phones, tablets, connecting new TVs, printers, and answering machines.
